5 Simple but Effective Ways to Transform Your Bathroom and Morning Routine

Let's face it, a significant portion of the morning routine happens in the bathroom.

Rolling out of bed is sometimes the hardest part of the day, but when you have a mini spa experience waiting for you, it makes it a little easier to throw off the covers.

I was listening to the radio the other day when I heard the craziest fact. On average, we each spend over a year and a half of our lives in the bathroom. Can you believe that?? I got thinking about how we spend so much time in this small room in our homes, and decided to share some simple tips about how to make our bathrooms into a sanctuary, and how to transform a mundane morning routine into a mini spa experience.

1. Clear the Clutter

The bathroom drawer is where makeup samples go to die. Every time I get a sample, even of a product I am actually interested in, I cringe. I know that 9/10 times that sample will end up shoved into a corner of a drawer, likely curled up nicely with some long hairs (don't be like me, close the drawers when brushing your hair). Not to mention makeup or skincare products from 201? clearly past the use by 6, 12, or 24 months almost every product recommends. The only time I regret clearing out the old makeup is when halloween or theme parties roll around and they royal blue eyeshadow actually might have come in handy.

Clearing the clutter makes for a smoother morning. Stop wasting time digging for the 10 items you use every single day, minimize the rest! If you like to wait until the last minute like me, you'll suddenly find the time to do that extra step in your routine that you always wish you had another minute for.

2. Get Organized

One of the most important aspects of having a refreshed space is having an area that’s clean and clutter-free. I’m sure I’m not the only one that’s guilty of having a counter covered with products at times. Having some simple organization tools like a shelf, or baskets for your cupboards can go a long way! My favourite organization tools have come from the Dollar Store or our local Buy Nothing group (look that up on facebook if you don’t know what I am talking about). When everything has a place not only is it easier to find, but the tidy up takes seconds.

Towels. How often are we swapping out our towels? When my life isn't in chaos mode I like to swap out my hand towels every few days, and bath towels at least once per week. Even in chaos, a fresh towel goes a long way! Having a fresh stack of towels in my bathroom, perfectly folded and ready to go, is a small part of my organization that goes a long way. Not having a clean towel ready to go can throw a wrench into the smooth morning routine. Especially if you've just finished a shower, are dripping wet, and everyone else in the house is asleep. That fresh stack makes me smile. (pro tip: choose towels that make you excited to use them, it also makes it more exciting to swap them and do that extra load of laundry).

3. Add a Fresh Scent

No one wants a bathroom… to smell like a bathroom. But because most bathrooms are such small spaces, air fresheners can be overwhelming (or toxic). I love a good candle in the fall, but I don’t want to be hit with an overpowering aroma every time I walk into the bathroom. In the summer I like to open the window to let the fresh air in, but in Canada that isn't an option half the year. I’ve found that the solution to achieving that dreamy, Nordic spa vibe, is popping a eucalyptus shower bundle into the room. They provide the perfect amount of subtle, light, and natural air freshening. Want something a bit different? Give our eucalyptus and lavender shower bundles a try. It’s a combo you can’t go wrong with!

4. Incorporate Functional Decor

I definitely take a minimalist approach to bathroom decor. There's a lot happening in that tiny room. We love to finish off the bathroom with some clean, fresh towels, a lidded trash can to keep any garbage out of sight and out of mind, a favourite hand soap, and of course, a cute little bud vase eucalyptus stem pairing. We’re obsessed with this tiny piece of decor for anywhere in the house, but we just think eucalyptus creates such a calming atmosphere in the bathroom! It adds just enough to the decor without taking up too much counter space for the morning or evening routine.

5. Keep Skincare Within Reach

Lastly, I love to have my favourite skincare products within reach so that I can remember to do my skincare routine every morning. I really care about having a solid skincare routine that I can do daily as a form of self care. An added bonus to skincare products is they often has simple and modern packaging, pretty enough to become a fixture on your countertop without looking like clutter. Having my skincare within reach makes it harder to skip and my skin thanks me for it. Something about starting each day with a freshly cleansed and moisturized face has an impact on the rest of the day. I am not sure why it took until my mid-20s to realize that!
